The Volume of Isoflow measurement

Abstract
We analyzed the maximal expiratory flow volume curves before and after 3 vital capacity inhalations of 80% helium and 20% oxygen mixture (He-Oxygen gas mixture) in 15 asym¡þptomatic healthy smokers and 15 non-smokers.
The volume of isoflow after breathing He-02 gas mixture and the change in the maximal expiratory flow at 50% and 75% of vital capacity (QVmax5o and JV-a-75) were measured and was compared with other variables from the MEFV curves breathing room air. We also calculated the Coefficient of Variation (CV) for assessing the variability of each parameters.
The volume of isoflow showed a significant increase in smokers and 4Vmax75 also revealed a significant reduction in smokers. But, dVmaxSo and all the parameters from the MEFV curves in room air showed no significant difference between smokers and nonsmokers.
The AV-11.75 and V,sov/VC % were shown to have greater degree of variability than other variables from the MEFV curves breathing room air.
These results suggest that Variability of measurement of volume of isoflow should be considered in their interpretation.
